Property Tax Exemption

As a homeowner, you know that property tax exemptions amount to a pretty big deal. So you’ll be pleased to hear Florida also employs Property Tax Abatement for Renewable Energy Property.2

That’s great news for homeowners, considering that customer-owned solar systems can increase the value of your home by $15,000 on average.3 So not only will you not have to pay extra in taxes, you could get more for your home if you decide to move.

Sales Tax Exemption

Florida also offers the Solar and CHP Sales Tax Exemption.4 It’s a welcome addition to the other incentives available to homeowners looking to maximize their savings and increase their energy independence.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

On top of Florida net metering and tax exemptions, solar system owners are also eligible for the Federal Investment Tax Credit, or ITC,5 if you buy your own Florida solar panels. It even covers a Florida solar battery like Brightbox when you buy it with a solar panels.6 The tax credit amounts to 30% of the cost of purchasing your solar system.

However, ITC credits will begin stepping down from 30% at the end of 2019. The tax credit for systems in service after 12/31/19 will drop to 26%. After 12/31/20, it’ll drop even further to 22%, and by 2022 the residential credit will drop to zero.7 That’s why the time to go solar is now. But not to worry—we can help you explore the solar incentives available to you.

Additional Florida Solar Programs: Net Metering

Net metering is also available to solar system owners, and utilities like Duke Energy are getting on board in a big way.1

It’s pretty simple: if your solar system produces more energy than you need, your utility will give you credits on your electricity bill that you can use when you need to pull energy from the grid (for instance nighttime or on particularly cloudy days). Basically, you can “save” your solar energy for when you need it most. Read more on net metering here.
